| Last Week: This week the children are writing a story in Reading group. We are reviewing all the letters with a letter people day on Thursday. On Friday the fourth and fifth graders are doing four experiments for the Kindergarten and First grade. We will finish our Religion books with discussions of how Jesus is always with us. |

| This Week: We are nearing the end of the school year! This week we have some special activities planned. On Thursday, we celebrate letter people by dressing up as our favorite letter person and having a parade!! On Friday we get together with our 4th grade friends and have science day!!! | Last Week: This is a very busy and special week for kindergarten. If the weather cooperates, Monday will be planting day. St. Jude received a grant and will be planting a vegetable garden near the Rectory. When harvested we will give the food to those less fortunate. On Tuesday, Kindergarten will go to our first primary mass. Kindergarten planned this mass and many students have special jobs and will be reading. On Wednesday we go to the Lake Erie Nature and Science Center (8:00-12:00). On Thursday, we study plant and animal life at the zoo! (9:00-2:00). If it rains, we will plant on Friday (weather permitting) Please pray for good weather for our trips and special activities. |

| This Week: Along with the daily practice of the Phonics Dance “alphabet walk”, students continued exploring “hunks” and “chunks”. Currently, we are working on words with –aught and –ought sounds. In Reading, we are continuing to develop the skill of reading for meaning or reading comprehension and sequencing of events. In English we are working towards defining adjectives and being able to use an adjective to describe a noun. Our Literature unit was centered on Curious George. Students developed story maps as well as wrote short stories about Curious George. In Math, students are also developing their knowledge of addition and subtraction by memorizing equations. In Science we are looking at plants and animals of the rainforest. These concepts were developed on our field trip to the Cleveland Botanical Gardens. In Religion we are focusing our time on the sacrament of Baptism. |

In Math, students are also developing their knowledge of addition and subtraction by memorizing equations. We currently have a store set up in our classroom where we use addition (with and without regrouping) to buy items. In Science we are looking at plants and animals of the rainforest. In Religion we are focusing our time discussing how special we are in God’s eyes. |

| Last Week: Intermediate Reading is SOARING! 4/5 is going to be presenting their Lit. Circle books to other groups through various forms. 4th graders have had the opportunity to learn about baseball through literature. They have had the opportunity to work with the famous poem: Casey at the Bat. They have also enjoyed reading a great short story about Lou Gehrig. 5th graders have started Tuck Everlasting, and don't want to put it down. Exciting times. |

| This Week: The third grade will be taking the Off-Grade Proficiency Test in Writing on Wednesday, April 28, 2010. The students will be responding to given prompts and following the steps in the writing process beginning with a prewrite and concluding with a published draft. As always please encourage your child to do his/her best by insisting on a good night's sleep and providing a nourishing breakfast on the day of the test.
We are also working on preparing a special Mother's Day Mass, Reception, and a token of love to our great Room 3 Moms! |
| Last Week: The third grade field trip to the Great Lakes Science Center was fantastic. The class toured the center with their parent guides, and then we saw the movie, Hubbel, a Space Adventure, in the Omnimax
Theater. We concluded our trip with a tour of Cleveland on Lolley the Trolley. Both the students and adults had a great time!
As we return from a beautiful Easter Vacation, we are back in the saddle with preparation for our writing exam later in the month. All three reading groups and their teachers are enjoying three different books written by Roald Dahl. The selections are Witches, Charley and the Chocolate Factory, and The Magic Finger. With a variety of activities and discussions, the students should do well on their AR Tests.
Grade 3 is also planning the Mass for next Tuesday, April 20, 2010. Our plan will include a celebration of Earth Day.

| This Week: 4th grade: In Religion we are going over what are the basic beliefs we have about the Holy Trinity. We are singing the English jingles and classifying sentences for the Shurley English program. In Social Studies we are learning about the landforms of and surrounding states of Ohio. In Health we will be role playing ways to make our school a more caring, Catholic community.
5th grade: In Health, they are also role-playing ways to make St. Jude School a safer, more caring community. In Social Studies the 5th grade is showing off their knowledge of 10 state locations and capital cities. They are also finding places using latitude and longitude. Come see our photos from the first Intermediate Activity - students in grades 3-5 worked together to build community and show respect for all. |
| Last Week: Students are reminded that they can bring water bottles on the very hot days that we are supposed to have this week! In Religion the 4th grade will be naming the titles of Jesus and how these apply to our lives. In S.S., they will be reviewing some basic geographic terms and concepts. In Health, they will set goals for the year and learn how to respect each other in school. In English we will be starting the Shurley English program. The 5th grade will also be reviewing some geographic terms and concepts, particularly latitude and longitude. In Health class they will be learning how to make 'Bullies to Buddies' and not to be a bystander if they witness bullying. Both grades will begin spelling lessons. |

| This Week: 3rd graders have been exploring elapsed time problems and will be starting to review addtion facts this week. 4th grade students are reviewing missing addends, sequences, and place value. 5th grade math students are reviewing the comparing, adding, and writing of whole numbers. In English we are setting goals for the first quarter of the school year. |

| This Week: It’s the second week of school and the students are really moving along. The math classes have hit the books hard. Seventh and eighth grades are reviewing important aspects of arithmetic that are typically lost over the summer. Properties and basic operations will be discussed this week. We will slowly move into number lines, place value, factors, and divisibility.
The English classes are slowly getting back into the rush of writing. We have worked on a quick descriptive piece that will set us up for future writings. The sixth grade is working on setting short and long-term goals, and expressing the best ways for them to achieve their goals. The seventh grade dove right into grammar and will be learning about subjects and predicates this week.

| Last Week: Well the school year has begun and we are starting off on a good foot. The junior high math and English classes are beginning to get their feet wet and preparing themselves for the long road ahead. The English classes have begun to write their first works, and edit with peers and alone. It will be wonderful to see how much they improve and grow as writers this year. The math classes are reviewing work from last year in hopes to spark the fires of learning inside them. It has been a slow start to those fires; the wood I am using must be a little damp. It’s going to be a great year, and I think many of the kids are very excited to be back. |

| This Week: We have made it through our full week back at school! I'm amazed at how well the 6th graders have adjusted to the new routine!
This week in literature classes we have been review the literally elements. Seventh and eight grade began looking deeper into plot. All the students learned about the AR projects they will be doing this year.
In eight grade social studies we began looking at the groups that were in New America in the VERY beginning. We have been taking notes and also presenting some of the lessons to our classmates!

| Last Week: This week Junior High Literature students are reading some wonderful pieces of Literature! The 8 Eng/Lit class is continuing to enjoy October Sky, while the 8 Lit class is uncovering more of the problems Anne Frank and her family encounter while living in the 'Secret Annexe'. Both seventh grade class are reading poetry. The sixth grade classes are learning about point of view and theme. |

| This Week: As we begin this last quarter, the seventh graders will run a computer simulation to breed purebred dominant and purebred recessive traits in mice in order to predict the genotype and phenotype percents of the offspring. Then, they will breed the hybrid offspring to determine the genotype and phenotype percents of their offspring. The advantage to this is that many crosses can occur, providing a good statistical result. |
| Last Week: The judging for the science fair will take place on Wednesday of this week. There will be 14 judges and 79 projects from the seventh and eighth graders. They have been working on their projects since August, and now it’s time for the big day. On Wednesday evening from 5:30 pm until 6:30 pm, there will be an awards ceremony and an opportunity to view the projects. The high scoring students will have the chance to compete at the district level at Ashland University in March. Good Luck! |

We will be discussing the turning point in the war, and going over the impact of the revolution on the rest of the world. 7th grade will be taking a test on South East Asia and we will be working on study skills. 6th grade will also be working on study skills and focusing on the rise and fall of the Indian Empire |
| Last Week: This week in 8th grade social studies we are testing on the early part of the American Revolution. We are focusing on Benedict Arnold the hero, and will be covering how close we came to losing the war. 7th grade will be discussing Southeast Asia and the influence of China on Vietnam and Korea. The 6th graders are starting a new lesson on the emergence of India as an ancient world empire. They just completed testing on Hinduism and Buddhism. |
